Please read the following information very carefully. It contains information that is necessary to best prepare you for your upcoming test.
Four days prior to your procedure:
q If you are taking aspirin, aspirin containing products, anti inflammatory medications or blood thinners such as Coumadin or Plavix, you should discuss with your doctor whether or not you should stop these medications for four days prior to your procedure. If your specific medical condition allows, it is safest if performed off these medications.
q If you cannot stop these medications for the four days prior to your test, please contact our office and discuss with a triage nurse.
q If you are on Insulin, we ask that you hold your morning dose the day of your procedure. If you take insulin more than once daily, contact your primary care physician for further instructions regarding your insulin dose.
q Purchase a 10-ounce bottle of Magnesium Citrate, the green, lemon-lime flavor.
q Pick up your prescription for the Colyte solution at your pharmacy. This should have been called to your pharmacy at the time you scheduled your appointment.
Day prior to your procedure:
q You may have a light breakfast, followed by clear liquids only until 6 hours prior to your procedure.
q Drink at least 8 ounces of clear liquids every hour during the waking part of your day. Clear liquids include anything that you can see through including; beef and chicken bouillon bouillon, apple juice, white grape juice, soda (colas are also allowed), Jell-O or Popsicles (green, yellow only), and coffee. Avoid any liquid that is red, orange, purple in color.
q In the early morning, empty the Colyte powder in the gallon container and add lukewarm drinking water to the fill line on the container. Shake or stir well to ensure the ingredients are dissolved. Chill in the refrigerator.
q Continue to drink 8 ounces of clear liquids hourly.
q 4:00 p.m.- Drink the entire contents of the bottle of Magnesium Citrate. If desired, you may dilute with a clear liquid such as apple juice or 7-up.
q 5:00 p.m.- Begin drinking the Colyte solution. Drink one 8-ounce glass of the solution every 15-20 minutes. It takes about one hour for you to start having results-loose watery bowel movements. You will feel quite full but you will soon begin to feel more comfortable. Continue drinking the solution until you have consumed ½ gallon or half the fluid in the container. If your stools are completely clear, you may pour the other half down the drain or toilet. If your stools are not clear, drink the remaining ½ gallon until they are clear. If nausea or vomiting occur, stop for 30 minutes, and then resume drinking the Colyte. It will take approximately 1 hour after finishing the solution to complete the elimination process. If for any reason you feel you cannot tolerate this prep, than an alternate one will be necessary. You should purchase a Fleet Prep Kit #3, over the counter, and follow the instructions contained within for the 24 hour prep. Please advise the GI lab staff upon check in for your procedure regarding the change in prep and your results.
